In 1997, he was admitted to the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm to pursue a doctoral degree, focusing on positron emission tomography studies on dopamine and serotonin receptors in the living brain. He obtained his doctoral degree in 2001 and returned to Taiwan.

During his 20-year academic and clinical career in Taiwan, he served as the section chief at Tri-Service General Hospital and Taipei Veterans General Hospital, respectively. He has published over 100 scientific articles, with his most notable research being on the serotonin transporters image in patients with bipolar disorder and the dopamine transporters in patients with suicide.
